「狛犬(こまいぬ)」という想像上の神獣であり、同じく対になる獅子も当時の日本人はライオンを見たことが無い。そのため、これも獅子=ライオンではなく「獅子(しし)」という神獣であると考えられる。

一般的には、向かって右側の像は「阿形(あぎょう)」で、角はなく口は開いている。そして、向かって左側の像は「吽形(うんぎょう)」で、1本の角があり口を閉じている。両方の像を合わせて「狛犬」と称することが多いが、厳密には、角のない方の像を「獅子」、角のある方の像を「狛犬」と言い、1対で「獅子狛犬」と称するのが正しいとされている。昭和時代以降に作られた物は、左右共に角が無い物が多い。これらは本来は「獅子」と呼ぶべきものである。
